As an honored member of the 2024-2025 Friendly Schools Program, we are part of a small group of higher education institutions in the U.S. that make up the "military Friendly Schools" list created by the G.I. Jobs magazine.

Tools for your educational experience

Chapter 30 – Montgomery GI Bill®
Benefit provides a monthly educational assistance allowance for up to 36 months.

Chapter 31 - Vocational Rehabilitation
Benefit provides 100% of tuition, fees & books to qualified veterans with an established service-connected disability. Benefit includes a monthly allowance for living expenses.

Chapter 33 – Post 9/11
Benefit provides qualified veterans and dependents (with transferred entitlement) up to 36 months of educational assistance. Students at the 100% benefit level will receive up to the maximum allowed per academic year toward tuition/fees and may qualify for Yellow Ribbon benefits; students with less than 100% benefit will receive their prorated benefit level of the maximum allowed. In addition, students are eligible for a book stipend and a monthly housing allowance.

NOTE: Individuals serving an aggregate period of at least 36 months of active duty after September 10, 2001 are eligible for 100% of the maximum benefit.

Yellow Ribbon Program
Northeastern Seminary is proud to be a partner with the US Department of Veteran Affairs in administering the Yellow Ribbon program, providing qualified veterans and dependents 100% tuition coverage per standard academic year for Undergraduate and Graduate degree programs. Eligible students must be approved for Post 9/11 benefits at the 100% tier and cannot be Active Duty status.

Contribution: Northeastern Seminary will contribute up to an additional $10,000 per academic year and the VA will match dollar for dollar. These combined contributions, in addition to the Post 9/11 benefit, provide students with funding towards Northeastern Seminary tuition, per academic year. Total contributions cannot exceed cost of tuition.

Chapter 35 – Dependents’ Education Assistance (DEA)
Benefit provides monthly educational assistance to eligible dependents of certain veterans for up to 45 months.

Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill: Selected Reserve
Benefit provides a monthly educational assistance allowance for up to 36 months.

Chapter 1607 - Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)
Benefit provides a monthly educational assistance allowance for up to 36 months.

Military Chaplains Association
Provides financial assistance to seminary students who currently serve as chaplain candidates in the U.S. Air Force, Army, or Navy.

U.S. Air Force Chaplain
The U.S. Air Force has several ways you can join the Reserve Chaplain Service Program. This program offers tuition benefits for those specifically pursuing a seminary education. Contact your local recruiter for information.

U.S. Army Chaplain
While attending seminary, chaplain candidates may apply for tuition assistance through the U.S. Army Reserve. This program requires service of at least four years in a U.S. Army Reserve unit once you become a qualified chaplain. 

U.S. Navy Chaplain
Opportunities offered through a Navy Chaplain career include supervision in clinical pastoral education and tuition assistance for numerous off-duty educational programs. Contact: James Clark, 865.551.5862, clarkja@cnrc.navy.mil

Pursuing a vocation in ministry or theological scholarship can be a long journey of discernment and often is the result of a sense of calling. There is no "typical" theological student, no mold from which one must be cast in order find the right place for you. Please use these contacts, links and resources and you continue on your path to theological education.

Researching Your Federal and State Benefits
  • Federal: Contact the Veterans Administration to find out what benefits you qualify for under your military service contract or visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website. Many veterans qualify for more than one type of benefit, so you need to determine which benefit would help you best achieve your educational goals. To do this, you can use the Benefits Comparison Tool at the Department of Veterans Affairs website, or you call them at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (888.442.4551) from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central time Monday thru Friday.
  • State: See if you qualify for any state Veterans educational benefits. Visit this web page for information about the New York State Veterans Tuition Award (NYSVTA).

  • Chapter 10. Tutorial Assistance: VA may pay tutorial assistance to a student receiving benefits under chapter 30, 32, [35, or 106], section 903, or the Antiterrorism Act. The purpose is to help the student pay for any necessary tutoring. The allowance is a supplement to the claimant's monthly educational assistance allowance. Find the Tutorial Assistance Form here.

Download Your Military Records & Transcripts Apply For Benefits Online or Via USPS Mail
  • Online: You can apply online for education benefits through VONAPP on the Veterans Administration website. Use the paperwork you gathered in “Step Three” to apply. You may need to scan these documents and upload them.
  • USPS Mail: Another way to apply for benefits is through mailing Form 22-1990 to the VA Regional Processing Office. Remember that when you mail the form you will need to mail in copies of all the paperwork you gathered in “Step Three.”

  • Once you have completed the online application, please fill out the Veteran Information Sheet and send it to the School Certifying Official in the Registration Office.

Special note regarding your benefits: Northeastern Seminary reserves the right to reduce a student's Seminary funded financial aid (including merit aid) if the total of the student's grants and scholarship from all sources, including military, meets or exceeds the cost of tuition except where specifically addressed by regulation.
