Connecting With Students and Alumni

Northeastern Faculty Attend Society for Biblical Literature's Annual Meeting

Northeastern Seminary faculty participated in the Society of Biblical Literature's annual meeting in San Diego this past November. Co-hosted by the American Academy of Religion, this prestigious event highlights advancements in biblical scholarship, religious studies, and theology. This year, the conference offered more than 900 academic sessions and workshops, several of which showcased the recent research and scholarly work of Northeastern faculty, including Dr. Josef Sykora, Dr. Richard Middleton, and Dr. David Carr.

Dr. Josef Sykora presented his research titled "Serving Higher Authority: The Impact of the Canonical Ordering on Joseph's Actions towards the Egyptians in Genesis 41-47," while Dr. Richard Middleton shared two of his works: "An Inconsistent or Merciful God?: The Portrayal of Divine Adaptability and Responsiveness in 1 Samuel 2-3" and "Anticipations of Open Theism in 1 Samuel: God's Adaptability and Responsiveness in the Samuel-Saul Narrative." Dr. David Carr contributed with two presentations as well: "Fevers, Frameworks, and Friends: Disability and Human Agency in Mark's Gospel" and "What is the Bible? Who Gets to Decide?: 'The Bible's' Identity at the Museum of the Bible and Related Discourses."

The trip to the annual meeting gave Dr. Middleton the opportunity to meet in person with students in his mentoring cohort. This academic year he is serving as a faculty mentor for Every Voice, offering encouragement and counsel to ten graduate students from the US and overseas via monthly Zoom meetings. The cohort, designed for ethnic minority and Majority World students, supports those currently enrolled in theological education at the undergraduate, Master’s, or doctoral levels, providing them with valuable mentorship and guidance.

During the trip, Dr. Sykora, Dr. Middleton, and Dr. Carr had the opportunity to connect with Northeastern students and alumni at Rock Church, fostering meaningful discussion and strengthening ties within the Seminary's community.

What a privilege to have Northeastern students and alumni based across the nation and globe!
