Beyond Conference:

This workshop aims to explore the dynamics of Christian leadership in a cross-cultural organizational setting through three key components. First, we will examine the contemporary experiences of organizational members navigating cross-cultural environments and the leadership skills needed to build and serve effectively in such spaces. Second, we will review essential leadership qualities, considering how they can either foster or hinder cross-cultural harmony within an organization. Finally, we will seek to answer the critical question: "How do individuals who are friendly to the gospel experience cross-culturalism within their environment?"

Using the biblical narrative of Peter challenging Paul in Galatians 2, we will transition into discussing findings from qualitative research, ultimately culminating in the biblical vision of unity between Jews and Gentiles as described in Ephesians 2.

This interactive workshop will engage participants in the skills to communicate in high conflict situations from a healthy frame. As Jon Meacham has cited, we need to “battle for our better angels” when we are in conflict, especially conflict that involves political views. Research will be shared from the Harvard Negotiations Project contrasting a healthy communication frame with an unhealthy communication frame. A reflection journal will be provided so participants can reflect, learn, and identify growth areas relative to the needed dispositions and skills to cultivate for strong communication. Real life scenarios will be presented, and role played so participants can practice, coach each other, and find their voice to clearly communicate, stay present, and calm conflict.

In this workshop, we will consider how to engage in civil discourse in the real world. We will teach principles of civil discourse (how to dialogue with compassion and conviction) and then consider realistic scenarios in which we can practice the new skills. This will be a dynamic workshop full of practical wisdom and real-life practice that will help attendees learn to engage well with others.

This workshop offers an in-depth exploration of the United States' high incarceration rate and the injustices contributing to it. Participants will engage with documents, videos, statistics, and other materials to develop a deeper understanding of key issues. First, the history of mental health treatment in the U.S. will be examined, with particular focus on the deinstitutionalization movement of the 1950s–1970s and its role in increasing the number of mentally ill individuals in jails. Second, the impact of the War on Drugs on Black and Brown communities and its contribution to mass incarceration will be discussed. Finally, the workshop will highlight the importance of Diversion Courts in providing care as an alternative to incarceration.

Roberts Wesleyan University strives to cultivate humility and promote its practice in a world characterized by strife, polarization, and violence. One may reasonably wonder: Of all that is calling for our attention, why should we focus on humility? In this presentation, Professors Elvera Berry, Marlena Graves, and David Carr introduce the essential concept of intellectual and spiritual humility, discuss its utmost importance today, and offer suggestions for its cultivation and practice.

With a national election approaching, this workshop explores the complex relationship between Christianity and politics in today's polarized world. Featuring a panel of scholars and faith leaders, participants will gain insight into the historical, theological, and cultural dimensions of this interplay. Moderated by Rev. Dr. Douglas Cullum, this workshop invites open dialogue and reflection to equip participants for thoughtful engagement in their communities.

About: Angela is a dedicated School Psychology student at Roberts Wesleyan University. She is passionate about the intersection of psychology and diversity awareness in promoting mental health. In addition to her studies, she serves as a substitute teacher in the charter schools of Rochester, actively engaging with diverse student populations. Her commitment to understanding societal dynamics is evident in her research endeavors, including investigations into Segregation within Rochester City Schools and the impacts of Social Media on College students. Recently, Angela was accepted into the Mental Health Demonstration Project focusing on rural schools, furthering her dedication to mental health advocacy and support within underserved communities. Beyond academia, she is deeply involved in community initiatives. She is an active member of Latinas Unidas, contributing her time and skills to Community Outreach Programs at the Asbury First United Methodist Church. With academic rigor and community engagement, Angela embodies a holistic approach to fostering mental wellness and social equity.

About: Donovin Jones is a Marketing major at Roberts Wesleyan University, expected to graduate in May 2025. He has an extensive background in content creation and social media marketing, seamlessly merging strategic marketing with real-time content creation. As the founder of Don J Photo, he has done over 100 photoshoots, ranging from graduation portraits to sports and event photography. His notable partnerships include institutions like Niagara University, Fairfield University, and Duquesne University, as well as covering 6 Conference Championships and an NCAA Super Regional Championship. Donovin's professional experience includes working as a photographer for Steve Wilkinson Inc., where he provided posing instructions, curated photos for editing, and collaborated on large group shoots. An Eagle Scout and recipient of numerous scouting awards, Donovin is also an athlete, playing NCAA Division II Men’s Varsity Lacrosse at Roberts Wesleyan University. He is actively involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.), serving on its Executive Board as well as the Executive Board for Roberts Wesleyan’s Student Multicultural Advisory Council.
